Is this the Motorola DROID 5?

The OG Motorola DROID took the world by storm. Released in late 2009, it was named Time Magazine’s gadget of the year, beating out the Apple iPhone 3GS. With Verizon customers having gone through a succession of models like the LG Voyager, LG Dare and the Samsung Glyde (all featurephones), Big Red was in dire need of a smartphone that could keep its customers from jumping to AT&T where the iPhone was an exclusive in the states. With a strong marketing campaign (what iDon’t, DROID DOES), the Motorola DROID introduced the world to Android 2.0 and kicked off Androidmania.

Over the subsequent years, Motorola improved the QWERTY on the DROID line, making it one of the best in the business. Still built as sturdy as they come, changes were made when the Motorola DROID 4 took its design cues from the Motorola DROID RAZR and added 4G LTE connectivity to the hallowed name. For those who require a physical QWERTY keyboard and have been fans of the DROID line, you might be wondering if there will be a Motorola DROID 5. If some pictures found on Chinese website Weibo are legit, the answer is a resounding “Yes!”

It appears as though the screen on the Motorola DROID 5 will be in the range of 4.3 to 4.5 inches, growing from the 4 inches seen on the Motorola DROID 3 and DROID 4. The QWERTY looks the same as the backlit, laser cut one seen on the latter model. This unit will allegedly support NFC, wireless charging and be resistant to water and dust. Hopefully we will soon get some more information on the device, including specs, pricing and availability.
